Christmas Wreck 2003

I remember the great Christmas Wreck of 2003. It happened on Christmas Eve. I got the word over the Yahoo Egroup that it had happened in Woodstock and since I got off early that day anyway, I headed straight for town. They were already cleaning up. To my surprise, Santa Clause came by to see it, too!

A rail very close to the street broke in half and sent the grain train tumbling down.

Luckily it wasn't going very fast. The GNRR never does. The track was commonly out of gauge and had rotten timbers holding the rails in place.

The plastic pellet hopper didn't leak a drop. Neither did the cars with corn and soybeans. You could smell the corn in the air.
